Overcoming Hypocrisy

Many people, after seeing the hypocrisy of many Christians, have decided to reject Christ and be consistently non-Christian. But that's not the only way to flee hypocrisy. Easy to See Sin in Others

Recently I read an interesting letter to the editor in a Christian magazine. A girl wrote in to say that while she was watching the soap, Another World, she was shocked to see a guest appearance by a well-known Christian music performer. In her own words, she complained, ?What is this with Christian singers doing guest appearances on soap operas? Personally, I was confused that ?any Christian artist would do an appearance on a soap opera that promotes totally non-Christian morals such as casual sex, adultery, lying, cheating, killing, etc?.? Now, her complaint may very well be legitimate, but do you know what question popped into my mind? If these soaps that she seems so familiar with are so ungodly, why was she watching them? It?s so much easier to see the inconsistencies in others rather than ourselves. (Letters to the Editor, CCM Mag., Dec. 1992, p. 5)

On Birds and Handshakes

I heard a pastor tell of an incident that underscores our ability to act one way in church, another in real life. As the pastor was driving one day, he was greated by the sound of a car honking behind him, apparently demonstrating what he thought of the pastor's driving. Not content to show his wrath through honking, he pulled up beside him and flipped the pastor a bird (cross-cultural note: this is an offensive gesture made by lifting the middle finger at someone). At the moment of eye contact, the enraged driver realized that he was flipping off his pastor, and the pastor realized that this man was in his congregation, someone who only last Sunday morning had shook his hand warmly and told him, "Good sermon!" It's amazing how spiritual people can be on Sunday morning, with apparently no intention of putting the sermon into action during the week.? Copyright 2002 Steve Miller - All Rights Reserved
