The Importance of Belief

Examine Your Beliefs (Relevant introduction about bin Laden for an evangelistic talk or talk on Christian evidences.) Many people believe that if we provide for our children?s physical needs and give them a solid education, we?ve adequately prepared them to live productive lives. But I know of one child who grew up in a wealthy family where his physical needs were met. Educationally, he completed high school and graduated from a university with a degree in management and economics. But instead of becoming a productive citizen, he?s on the FBI?s "Most Wanted List," being linked to multiple terrorist attacks, including fatal bombings, plots to kill a U.S. president and the pope, and is the prime suspect in the recent attack on the Pentagon and the mass murder of the innocent thousands in the twin towers in New York. That?s right, I?m speaking of perhaps the most dangerous man alive, Osama bin Laden. His life proves that it?s not enough to have financial security and a good education. You?ve got to have the right BELIEFS. You see, at some point he adopted extremist religious view that justifies killing innocent who don?t believe like he believes. Today it?s trendy (and politically correct) to say that, regarding religion, it doesn?t matter so much what you believe, as long as you believe it and live consistently with it. Osama bin Laden proves the folly of this statement. He may very well be living consistently with his extreme beliefs. Thus, he?s living out Jesus? warning to His disciples as He prophesied, "?a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God." (Jn. 16:2b, NIV) Jesus knew that what you believe is central to who you are and how you live. It?s not enough to believe. It?s incredibly important WHAT you believe and WHO you believe in. It?s he who believes IN HIM that has eternal life (Jn. 3:16). And that belief assures our hearts in troubled times. As Jesus said, "Let not your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me?I go to prepare a place for you." (Jn. 14:1-3, NASB) So what you believe about God and what you believe about Jesus are incredibly important. Let?s examine today what we believe?. (To push this point further, you could add the life of Ted Bundy, the one time law student who killed an estimated 50 girls. The infamous Unabomber once taught Math at a prestigious university.)
