Family in Crisis

A state of crisis exists in marriages and families today: ?The number of divorces in America has increased almost 200% in the last 30 years. (National Ctr for Health Statistics) ?Only about 50% of marriages today are first marriages, compared with 70% in 1960. (National Center for Health Statistics) ?Today, 17 million children live in single-parent homes. Approximately 90% are without a father. (US Bureau of the Census) ?In 1990, nearly one out of every 4 pregnancies in the US ended in abortion. (Alan Guttmacher Institute) ?In 1990, 65.2% of all black children were born to unwed mothers. (National Ctr for Health Statistics) ?Since 1960, violent crimes have increased more than 500% while the population has increased only 41%. Divorce Revolution has Failed

?The divorce revolution has failed? -- So says the Council of Families in America, which added that the ?steady displacement of a marriage culture by a culture of divorce and unwed parenthood? is a losing cause. The council--a diverse group of scholars and analysts from across different political and philosophical spectrums--came to this conclusion following two years of research, debate, and study. The council released its findings in 1995 with the volume Marriage in America: A Report to the Nation. Divorce, the council found, ?has created terrible hardships for children, incurred insupportable social costs, and failed to deliver on its promise of greater adult happiness. The time has come to shift the focus of national attention from divorce to marriage and to rebuild a family culture based on enduring marital relationships.? The study found there is a connection between the declines in the well-being of children and the institution of marriage. ?Children from broken homes have two to three times more behavioral and psychological problems when they become teens than children from intact homes. ?70% of juveniles and young adults in correctional facilities did not live with both parents while growing up. ?Three of every four teens who commit suicide, and four of every five psychiatric admissions, come from broken homes.
