Two Legacies

The Story of Two Lives: There once was an atheist named Max Jukes who lived in the early 1740's in New England. He lived a godless, selfish life. He married an ungodly girl, and from the union there were 310 who died as paupers, 150 were criminals, 7 were murderers, 100 were drunkards, and more than half of the women were prostitutes. His 540 descendants cost the State one and a quarter million dollars. Known everywhere as a great American man of God, Jonathan Edwards lived at the same time as Max. Jonathan married a godly woman and established his profession as a preacher. During his pastoral career he spent time as one of the most famous preachers in his area, as one of the most unknown preachers in a backwoods pastorate, and as a missionary to the Indians. Yet, despite all of his time spent in the ministry, he intentionally set aside one hour a day with his own children to teach them God's Word. An investigation was made of 1,394 known descendants of Jonathan Edwards. Thirteen became college presidents, 65 were college professors, 3 became United States senators, 30 judges, 100 lawyers, 60 physicians, 75 army and navy officers, 100 preachers and missionaries, 60 authors of prominence, one a vice-president of the United States, 80 became public officials in other capacities, 295 college graduates, among whom were governors of states and ministers to foreign countries. Spielberg Gets Ideas From Children

Great leaders don't think they have all the good ideas. Instead, they humbly solicit ideas from all levels of their organizations. Steven Spielberg is the most successful movie producer in the world. He's got plenty of creative ideas and has every right to tell the actors to sit quietly and allow him to tell them what to do. Yet, listen to actress Drew Barrymore tell how Spielberg worked with her and the other children in the movie E.T. ?Right off, I fell in love with Steven [Spielberg]. In many ways he was ? and always will be ? the dad I never had. I wanted so badly to be accepted by him, and when I was, it meant a lot to me. I was thrilled when he invited me to his Malibu house. We?d run along the beach, collect seashells, and build sand castles. It was so much fun to hang out with him. But working with Steven was even better. In most of the scenes he let me do whatever I wanted. All of us were free to offer input, but he especially seemed to like the silly things the kids came up with. Like in the scene where Henry, Robert, and I are hiding E.T. in the closet from our mother, Henry tells me that only kids can see E.T. There wasn?t a line to go with that, and Steven told me to just make something up. So when we did the scene again, I just shrugged and said, ?Gimme a break!? He?d often take me aside and say something like, ?You?re talking to me now. Do you really like this? Or do you have a different idea? Do you think it could be done a different way?? Eventually I?d add something and Steven would smile and say, ?Good, let?s combine ideas.? It made me feel so good. For once I didn?t feel like some stupid little kid trying to make people love me. As leaders in the home and in the world, we desperately need good ideas. Also, we need to help our children and employees to feel ownership, like they're an important part of the team. Research: Authoritative Parenting

Building on earlier studies of white, middle- class youths, recent research shows a connection between parental autoritativeness and teen maturity. Seeing that 10,000 youths from diverse backgrounds were surveyed, this research "trancends ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and family structure." "Authoritative leadership in the home is not to be confused with "authoritarianism." Authoritative parenting corresponds to three factors: (1) Acceptance and involvement pertains to the teen's perception of parental love and responsiveness. A sample test item: "How often does your family do something fun together?" (2) Firm Control assesses parental monitoring and rules. Questions like "How much do your parents try to know where you go at night?" indicate intentional limit-setting and concern. (3) Psychological autonomy points to non-coercive, democratic discipline; it encourages adolescents to express their individuality in the family. The negativity-stated questions include: "How often do your parents answer your by saying something like 'You'll know better when you grow up'?" and "When you get a poor grade in school, do your parents try to make your life miserable?" The payoffs? Researchers claim four : higher grades, more self-restraint, less worry and depression, and reduced tendency toward delinquent behavior.
