CNN Makes Deadly Mistake

On one fateful day in April, 2003, someone at the Cable News Network faithfully published the obituary column on the Web. Problem was, the people hadn't died yet. How could that happen? Major news networks must be ready to announce the death of a famous world figure the minute they get word of it. They can't wait around for someone to research the person's achievements and write a nice column. Thus, they go ahead and write these obituaries before the people die, so that they will be prepared. Someone simply wasn't paying attention to what list they were publishing, so if the Pope, Fidel Castro, Bob Hope, Nelson Mandela, Dick Cheney and Ronald Reagan logged onto their internet news at the right time, they would have discovered that, unknown to them, they had unexpectedly died. This brings up an interesting thought. If your family and acquaintances were to write up your obituary now, what would they say about you? [Activity: 1) Write down some of the things you think they would say. 2) Imagine that you were the person you'd like to be at the time of your death. Write your obituary using the character and accomplishments you'd like for people to see in you. 3) Have a discussion on how you'd need to change in order to become the person you'd like to be. What Anchors the Redwoods?

In the Muir Woods north of San Francisco, the great Coastal Redwoods grow to dizzying heights of over 300 feet. You'd think that a redwood must have an incredible root structure to anchor it to the ground during storms. Not so. Its root structure is inadequate. So how do these trees live so long, some predating Alexander the Great? They support one another. That's right. The redwoods never grow in isolation, but grow in clusters. Thus, the roots intertwine, anchoring them so securely that they can weather storms for a thousand years. Similarly, God didn't make our root system strong enough to stand alone against the storms of life. Instead, he made us interdependent creatures. We need each other. As Ecclesiastes puts it, "Two are better than one." Are you living with the illusion that you can make it on your own, without the help of anyone else? Don't try it. We were never meant to live that way. When you're tempted to live it alone, remember the mighty redwoods. For example, here are some things that kids have learned early on in life: 1 - No matter how hard you try, you can't baptize cats. 2 - When your Mom is mad at your Dad, don't let her brush your hair. 3 - You can't trust dogs to watch your food. 4 - You can't hade a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk. 5 - Puppies still have bad breath even after eating a Tic-Tac. In a daring rescue, they found seven American P.O.W.'s and brought them out to safety. How did they perform so flawlessly? According to Castro, one of the participants in the mission, "All the scouts who went in on the rescue did great. They showed great speed and aggressiveness. They knew what to do and they did it." "His battalion spent 45 days at sea transiting from San Diego to Kuwait. Much of the time was spent holding classes and training sessions on tactics including moving through built up areas like the town square in Samarra." "If you train right, you can rely on it no matter what happens," Castro said. "We trained so much for situations like this, I didn't have to give any direction.
