Even Schwarznegger Needs Parents' Praise

At 15 years of age, Arnold Schwarzenegger had his first work-out with weights and soon set his sights on become the greatest living body builder. Incredibly, within four years of extremely disciplined training, he placed second in the Mr. Universe contest. The next year, at age 20, he won the contest before the roaring applause of thousands of fans. You would have thought that this honor would have been enough to fulfill anyone. But it wasn?t enough to have the approval of his body building fans. He wanted the approval of his parents. But when he called home to tell them the news of his incredible accomplishment, although they were glad to hear from him, they couldn?t share his excitement because they had no clue as to what he had just accomplished. You see, they didn?t understand Arnold?s love for body building. Nor did they understand the sport. Apparently, they had never tried to understand his dreams, at least not enough to share his excitement about something he had given his all to obtain. Instead, they were disappointed that he hadn?t yet finished college and gotten a ?real job.? After he hung up the phone, this 250 pounds of solid muscle, this newly crowned Mr. Universe was brought to despondency over a little phone call. According to Schwarzenegger, ?After I hung up the phone I felt depressed. I told myself it was because they couldn?t relate to a world championship in bodybuilding. Because they had never seen anything like it. ? I felt they ought to have at least realized what it meant to me.? He had to try hard to put that blow out of his mind. But finally (and this statement should send a chill down every parent?s spine) Arnold writes, ??I started looking for the approval of the other people.? (Arnold, The Education of a Bodybuilder, by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Douglas Kent Hall, A Fireside Book, New York, pp. 81,82) Parents and small group leaders, do you encourage your children and students for their accomplishments? Do you try to get inside of them to understand their loves and goals and dreams? Even if you can?t relate to their interests, can you at least try to realize how much those interest mean to them? Stein on Relationships

(Good for an introduction to a lesson or series on relationships.) Many of you have seen Ben Stein on the MTV game show where people try to win his money by beating him at answering difficult questions. As well as being an actor on both TV and movies, this brilliant, successful man also teaches Securities Law at Pepperdine University. Stein once wrote an article in Reader?s Digest (Nov. 1994, p. 202) entitled ?Mistakes Winners Don?t Make.? One of his biggest points was this: ?The inability to make and keep friends is involved in every single failure I have ever seen.? Isn?t it interesting that we spend years studying history, math and science, yet perhaps no time at all studying relationships.Go ahead, make the honor role or even be valedictorian of your class. But if you neglect learning how to love people and get along with them the way Jesus taught us to, you?ll likely find yourself failing over and over in the areas that mean the most to you in life. Of Mice and Blondes

Some people refuse to tame their moose breath, are loud and obnoxious, constantly talk about themselves and then wonder why they can't make friends. It's amazing how they completely miss what is obvious to everyone else. They are sort of like the blonde roommates who each bought a mouse. When they got home the first blonde said how are we going to tell them apart? The second blonde said why don't we take one and chop off one of its legs? But during the night the mouse with four legs said to the mouse with three legs, "That's not fair -- I want three legs too." So the mouse with three legs told him to eat one of its legs. And so he did. The next morning the blondes were upset about this so they did the same thing as the day before. But again the mouse with three legs ate one of his legs. This went on until both mice had no tails and legs. Then one of the blondes shouted, "ALL RIGHT. THAT'S IT, YOU TAKE THE BLACK ONE AND I'LL TAKE THE WHITE ONE."

Blonde Gets Painting Job

It's important to learn how to listen. A blonde was hard up for money, so she walked around her neighborhood, trying to find a job. She met a nice man who said he would give her work. All she had to do was paint his porch white. He gave her a bucket of paint and left. He walked into his house, laughing. He told his brunette wife what he had done. "Frank, our porch covers half of the house! You're so mean." his wife replied. Three hours later, the blonde went in the house, and gave the bucket of white paint back to the man. The astonished man handed her a $100 bill, and asked how she finished it so quickly. "It takes time, but it was easy." was her reply. "Oh, and it's a Ferrari, not a Porsche."

In a speech to a high school, Bill Gates dished out 11 things that youth don't learn in school (see the rest under "Work Ethic" category). Here is rule #11 - RULE 11 Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

The Worst Part of Success
